Soul Rising by Black Box Down

Awesome FREE indie pop track

Checkout "Soul Rising", a great new track by BLACK BOX DOWN, the side-project of STAARK songwriter/producer Matt Cumming. Matt wrote and recorded this haunting song by himself in just ONE day and yet, it sounds supremely awesome - a rather striking song with slightly strange lyrics!

Download "Soul Rising" for FREE along with an equally great free track "Call Your Bluff" from the official band site. Pls do share the love by liking the BBD Facebook fanpage too!

Blondie - Greatest Hits and Other Favorites !

It was 6 AM on a frosty, chilled morning and I was in a lousy tent on a hiking nature school camp. Not much fun really! I was the first one to wake up and I turned on my guide’s Walkman to the sound of Blondie, I lay there in my sleeping bag listening to the sound of their hit single, "Denis" and my first contact with Debbie Harry, her boyfriend guitarist Chris Stein and company.

"Denis" a cover version of Randy and the Rainbows' 1963 hit was a huge hit of those days from their 1978 album – Plastic Letters and put the young US band, (considered an underground act until then) on top of the world rock charts. There was something about "Denis". You cant be sure if it was the detail that De-nis was pronounced De-nee or that part of the song was sung in French. Whatever it was, Blondie were hailed as the forerunners of the new punk revolution and more so, as it was fronted by a female vocalist.

In 1978, Blondie were leaders in the new wave, punk rock movement but they went on to flout that classification too. The late 1970's saw the release of several Blondie albums "Blondie" (1976), Plastic Letters (1978), Parallel Lines (1978), Eat to the Beat (1979) and a string of hit singles. It's hard to pick the most outstanding - "Picture This", "Hangin on the Telephone", “Sunday Girl”, “Atomic” and "Heart of Glass" all come to mind. The last of those were the group's first US No.1 hits, building on the success that they originally found in the UK.

Something extraordinary happened as the '80's dawned, Blondie the punk band transformed themselves into more of a Pop rock, new wave band with strong dance and pop influences. Examples would include the Richard Gere starrer "American Gigolo" soundtrack which featured "Call Me" collaboration with composer Giorgio Moroder that became a worldwide super hit. Their 1980 album 'Autoamerican' a stepping stone to more success produced hits like "The Tide is High" with its strong reggae and ska references and rap-influenced “Rapture”.

Debbie Harry meanwhile released a solo album of her own of 1981, "Koo Koo" featuring the small hit “Backfired” and probably caused the inevitable brief break-up of the band released. In 1982, after a quickpatch up, Blondie released their 6th Album “The Hunter” in 1982. While a critical failure, it still gave them 2 hit singles “War Child” and Island of Lost Souls”.

The 80's and 90's were definitely wilderness years for the entire Blondie team. The renamed Deborah Harry found modest success with her solo projects which though promising much, lacked direction or originality in terms of music while the Blondie, the Band toured across the world.

Their defining moment perhaps was the release of their 1999 album 'No Exit' and “Maria” , the hit Single. ‘Maria’ is a sexy pop rock anthem that is a powerful ambassador for the rest of the album. Not many know that “Maria” also gave the band the unique distinction of being one of only two American acts (the other being Michael Jackson) to ever reach number one spots in the UK singles charts in the 70s, 80s and the 90s.

Subsequently, Blondie released several more albums The Curse of Blondie (2003) that featured the hit “Good Boys” and the more recent Panic of Girls (2011) which featured “Mother” and “What I Heard”.

However, No Exit remains in my view, their best effort and my favorite Blondie album. Besides the superb “Maria”, it features 2 more great tracks “Nothing Is Real but the Girl” and the title track “No Exit” featuring rap superstar Coolio.

Rather than sticking to the winning sound of the late 70's, the band built a strong new identity in No Exit. The persuasive musical influences were still all very there, with strong references to the punk and pop sounds of their past but fused with the current sounds of the 90’s pop and rock scene. What this concoction produced, once out of the blender, is an remarkable album of quality punk pop rock. Combining the novelty of their new found maturity with the wisdom of their vast experience "No Exit" is a glowing testimonial to everything Blondie have always been known for and why they are still considered one of the best selling bands of all time.

Juliana Hatfield Three - Become What You Are (1993)

Feminist Power Pop Rock from the 90's!

Juliana Hatfield Three’s 1993 album "Become What You Are" falls into the Alternative Nation / 120 Minutes marketing category (tip #1 to media empires: know your target audience) of the 90’s era. The style is "alternative power pop rock," or pop music with more of the belligerence and hard edge of rock, to which Hatfield adds her own take. The result is a lot like PJ Harvey & KD Lang - a woman vocalist/ musician who takes on the trappings of traditionally male-dominated rock music, and subverts them, exposing personal frailties using riffs and poses usually used to blow up imagined strengths.

Songs like the hit "Spin the Bottle" and "My Sister" are like glimpses into the private life of a unsettled young woman for whom every day is simply a struggle to survive on her own terms and to be acknowledged for herself. Respect as an individual is as important to Hatfield it seems. as songs like "Supermodel" and "A Dame With a Rod" attest - the message being that this is not just another pretty face, so you had damn well better not try to treat her like one, and it’d be a pretty good idea if you didn’t treat any woman like one, and an even better idea if every woman was willing to stand up for the respect she deserved. The very title of the album, “Become What You Are” is a call to action: recognize your self-worth, Hatfield says, and don’t let anything stop you from realizing your potential.

At the same time, she doesn’t lie and say that this is easy, but shows the personal demons against which she fights to become what she is. I don’t know what the "official" riot grrl take is on Hatfield -- whether she might be too pop or not -- but it seems to me like her record is right in line with their street-level feminist agenda, and perhaps even more accessible on a musical level. Hatfield’s voice is still a bit rough, but it works -- this isn’t meant to be polished pop, after all, and with the instrumentation around her voice, you hardly notice the minor flaws. This was probably one of the better records of the 1993 summer and strongly recommended.

Mr Brooks (2007) Soundtrack - Ramin Djawadi

A Mesmeric Soundtrack Worthy of Any OST Collection

My favorite Kevin Costner film has to be undoubtedly 2007’s Mr. Brooks – a suave suspenseful thriller in an unusual Jekyll and Hyde setting that cleverly reinvents the serial killer genre.

Though blessed with an exceptionally creative script and top notch supporting show by the likes of Demi Moore, William Hurt, Lindsay Crouse and Dane Cook (in a superior negative role); what makes Mr. Brooks truly stand out is its enthralling hypnotic score by Ramin Djawadi, the award winning German composer of Prison Break (2005-09) and Ironman (2008), most recently heard on Colin Farrell’s horror comedy reboot Fright Night (2011) and Sam Worthington’s 2010 fantasy remake – Clash Of the Titans.

Mr. Brooks’ electronic textured score is a restrained kinetic tour de force with an eerie atmospheric undertone that blends perfectly with the movie's dark subject matter and intricate screenplay. A best seller, this soundtrack received rave reviews fetching Ramin Djawadi a ‘Discovery of the Year’ nomination at the World Soundtrack Awards in 2007.

Watch out for “Hallway Burial”. “Thumbprint Killer”, “Graveyard Standoff”, the mesmerizing “Mr. Brooks” and the magnetic surprise vocal track “Vicious Traditions” by the indie alternative NZ/UK band – The Veils. Mr. Brooks’ is an immensely satisfying soundtrack worth many listens. Download now and take the pleasure in!

Billy Idol – Cyberpunk (1993)

Remembering the Original Cyberpunk

3 times Grammy nominated William Michael Albert Broad, better known as Billy Idol was the original MTV pioneer and quintessential punk rocker who mined platinum for years with numerous hit albums including the hugely popular Rebel Yell (1983) (featuring the international hit “Eyes Without a Face”) which catapulted him to superstar status, 1986’s Whiplash Smile and 1990’s Charmed Life. Although immensely popular and successful, his latter music sounded increasingly outmoded, relying far too often on his typical scorn and the Billy Idol trademark howl than on any new musical direction.

Then the accomplished punk rebel discovered the futuristic worlds of Neal Stephenson and William Gibson, one of the greatest Science fiction writers of our times who helped define the cyber world genre. Gibson’s vision of an ultramodern future where information is the most valuable commodity and where console cowboys physically jack into their computers to cruise through cyberspace captured Idol’s imagination. He bought a computer, learned how to use it DIY and starting hanging out in cyberspace.

Soon, Idol made what, in many minds was the predictable evolution from a regular punk to a cyber punk, with his 1998’s experimental concept album aptly called 'Cyberpunk', an electronic tour de force of intense techno beats and cyber-lyrics that has one foot in Rock and the other in the brave new cyberdelic world of the early 90s.

Inspired by his trek into the computerized world of electrons, cybertrons and fiber optic cables along with his overzealous fascination with sci-fi culture, Cyberpunk touched upon many of diverse themes the cyber subculture of those early days of the Internet (usenet) embraced.

Lyrically presenting a revolutionary world controlled by corporate overlords and populated by cybernetic cowboys, ardent religious fanatics and a zombie working class held in virtual slavery, Cyberpunk worked well as one of the first musical interpretations of cyberpunk culture and idealism, acting as a bookend and a shining example to new artists exploring unchartered musical frontiers. In fact, Cyberpunk was the first album by a mainstream artist to feature an email id !!!, a special edition multimedia floppy disk (as CR-ROMS were expensive then), a supplementary Shock to the System VHS cassette or actively embrace the Internet in its development and promotion.

While many fans and critics disagreed, the new-fangled change suited him well, breathing new life to his style (Billy Idol was James Cameron's first choice for the T2 Cyborg in Terminator 2) and a raw electronic energy to his music. And although a critical and commercial failure some calling it 'one of the worst albums of all time'; musically at least, Cyberpunk offered some of the best that Idol had produced since the days of "White Wedding" or "Dancing With Myself," recapturing the original strength, appetite and ferocity that originally fired Idol into stardom and led to his previous successes.

Lyrically entrancing and tunefully diverse with a strong electronic flavor, “Cyberpunk” is rhythmic, provocative and often times disturbingly dissonant, much like the discordant society being described, the world that we have now become.

I have not added the entire album of 20 tracks here but only the notable hits and some of my personal favorites including "Shock to the System", "Heroin", "Adam in Chains", "Power Junkie", "Love Labours On" and "Mother Dawn", a fast paced duet with Durga McBroom (of Blue Pearl)

Gothic Rock Greatest Hits - A Websnacker Exclusive!

The Very Best of Gothic Rock Hits - Goth Rock, Dark Wave & Gothic Metal Mp3s

I had planned this Gothic Hits compilation to coincide with Halloween (Oct 31) but thanks to my terrible time management skills, it has taken me 3 weeks to finally bring it to fruition. In fact, this is my first music post in the last 45 days so I will make it special.

For many “Gothic Rock” is an acquired taste with a bad reputation! At heart, "Goth Rock" refers to the musical style invented by second-generation British Punk bands like the hugely popular The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees and the post-punk Joy Division (the predecessors of New Order) – gloomy, melancholic music that embraced darkness and excessively gloomy imagery but the Gothic style is actually quite broad and has serious cultural antecedents in the work of writers like Mary Shelley and Horace Walpole. The pop "Gothic" style has deeply influenced our culture and is today represented in the music of a wide variety of bands, from Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry’s Dead Can Dance to the more popular Marilyn Manson. At its worst, Gothic music is pathetically hackneyed, a collection of clichéd lines about lost vampires, blood and arcane creatures of the night. At its best, Gothic rock and its subgenres can be frighteningly morbid, darkly romantic and melodiously tuneful all at the same time.

And here’s your chance to sample this great often neglected genre. Featuring some of the very best Gothic tunes – from plain vanilla gothic rock and gothic metal to dark wave, electronica tinged gothic synth pop plus a little symphonic dark metal too, you’ll hear them all. And I have intentionally kept it as accessible as possible!

Included are some of my personal favorites too - “Cry Little Sister” by the talented English singer-songwriter - Gerard McMann (from the “Lost Boys” Soundtrack), “Kaiser Star” by the Danish indie dark rock act - Ruined By Martin (or RbM) and “Heaven’s A Lie” by Lacuna Coil, the famed Milanese Italian gothic metal band of Andrea Ferro and Cristina Scabbia.

Other acts featured here include Mono Inc and Wolfsheim, both from Hamburg; Within Temptation, the Dutch metal/alternative rock band; Switchblade Symphony, the San Francisco ensemble; Sisters of Mercy, the English gothic rock band and Sirenia, the well-liked symphonic gothic metal band from Norway. I have a penchant for Finnish music so have added 3 acts – HIM, the Helsinki rock band of Ville Valo; Amorphis, a Nordic melodic metal band and Nightwish, the symphonic dark metal band famous for “Nemo” from the soundtrack of the underground horror thriller “Cave” and perhaps Finland’s most successful band export.

14 tracks in playlist, average track length: 4:50

1. Amorphis - Silent Waters (4:50)
2. Gerard McMann - Cry Little Sister (Lost Boys Soundtrack) (4:47)

Websnacker’s Electronica Free Mp3 Mix Tape

What I have Been Listening this Week

I am not much of an electronic music fan but I will admit, there have always been some exceptions, especially the trip hop/trip rock, downtempo, lounge or the danceable electronica variety. The following electronic tracks have been on consistent replay on my car stereo for the last one week and one of the many reasons, why I thought they qualify as a great upload to share with you folks.

Pay attention to the Norwegian duo Roykspopp’s superb ‘What Else is There’, Teddybears’ 'Cobrastyle' and to the Paul Oakenfold/Unkle remix of Ian Brown’s 'Fear'. I heard this beautiful track by the ex-Stone Roses lead vocalist in Octane (aka Pulse), the under-rated road thriller starring Madeleine Stowe and Norman Reedus in 2003. 7 years later, I am still hooked to it and I am sure, you will too. Besides, there are 15 more free tracks for you to download and enjoy!

18 tracks in playlist, average track length: 4:09

Gotcha 1985 Original Movie Soundtrack + Bonus Mp3s

A WebSnacker Exclusive Mp3 Release

My last movie review post received an unusual number of requests; not for a movie upload but for the soundtrack of Gotcha - the 1985 teen action adventure starring Anthony Edwards and Linda Fiorentino. I was not at all surprised, they ought to.

Finding this from my collection was a pain though, my vintage hard disk wont boot and if it did, it wont let me search. Anyway, I hope it was worth the effort. Go ahead, download and let the nostalgia floor you..

a-ha’s Greatest Hits - A Websnacker Exclusive Compilation

Awesome Hit Mp3s from the Norwegian New Wave Trio

Founded in 1982 by Morten Harket, Paul Waaktaar-Savoy and Magne Furuholmen, a-ha (spelled only in lower-case) is Norway’s best selling, Grammy nominated new wave band that has internationally sold over 40 million albums, won a phenomenal number of critical and popular awards and the first (and perhaps the only) Norwegian band to hit the No.1 spot in the U.S. charts.

Yet, a-ha is often misconstrued as an one-hit wonder for “Take On Me”, the extraordinary billboard no.1 hit of 1985 which alone is estimated to have sold over 10 million copies globally and the equally popular hit video that won 6 MTV Video Awards in 1986 including the Viewer's Choice award, Best New Artist, Best Direction, Best Special Effects and Best Concept Video (as it featured the rotoscoping technique for the first time).

With over 9 hit studio albums, beginning from their 1985 debut ‘Hunting High and Low’ to ‘Foot of the Mountain’ which was released in June 2009, a-ha are one of few remaining pop/rock bands from the 80’s that have transcended their original days of glory and have continued to be successful to this day. In fact, after they announced a formal split in Oct 2009, tickets for their Dec 2010 farewell show at Oslo were sold out in less than 2 hours. a-ha also incidentally hold a Guinness World Record for paying audiences as their January 1991 show at the Rio festival in Brazil attracted a paid audience of over 198,000 fans – the largest in the world for a single act !

I was first introduced to a-ha in 1989 when a friend of mine loaned me a tape of their ‘Stay On These Roads’ album which also featured the title theme song of “The Living Daylights” - the James Bond film. Since then, I have bought all their albums, been hooked by their infectious Nordic blend of breezy synthpop, Morten Harket’s moody vocals and amazing lyrics.

As a fan tribute, I have compiled a special handpicked 2 hours+ compilation of their greatest hits from 1985 to 2009, cult favorites like “Take On Me”, "The Sun Always Shines on T.V.", "Summer Moved On," and some personal selections like “I Wish I Cared” for you to download and enjoy. I am confident you’ll love this unique a-ha music assemblage.

Websnacker's Essential Post-Grunge Alt Rock Hits

This post should have been up by Sunday but alas, a lousy ISP and a harried client had kept me busy for the last 2 days and I could make time for this post only today. Anyway, what I have assembled this time is a high octane collection of rock hits, mostly post-grunge, hard alternative with a tinge of heavy metal and art rock. If you are an alt rock fan, I’m sure you’ll love it.

This is what you’ll get to hear…

The Mississippi post-grunge rockers – 3 Doors Down’s Duck and Run" from their 2000 debut platinum album 'The Better Life', the subtly melodic Splender’s "Yeah, Whatever" from their best selling 1999 debut album, 'Halfway Down the Sky' and the Pennsylvania band Breaking Benjamin’s massive billboard hit "The Diary of Jane" that had the unique distinction of being the fastest peaking rock single of 2006, eventually reaching #2 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, #4 on the U.S. Modern Rock Charts and simultaneous airplay at more than 100 top radio stations across America and Canada.

In 2004, pop diva Anastacia added an edgy feel to her music which she called "sprock" a mix of pop, soul and rock and released a self-titled album that helped her increase her popularity beyond America. “I Do”, an enjoyable collaboration with Sonny Sandoval, P.O.D’s lead vocalist was proof of the new sprock feel that blended well with her Tina Turner-ish appeal. I have added this cos it has great lyrics besides a nice tune.

Similar fav additions include Texas rockers Seven Channels’ Breathe”, Hoobastank’s radio hit “Crawling In The Dark” and Bush’sLittle Things” a billboard hit from their super-successful 1994 album, 'Sixteen Stone' though it was not as accepted as their other hit “Glycerine”. Did you know that Bush was a UK band originally from London and not an American band as many strongly still believe. It is also worthwhile to know that the D2, the popular Bulgarian group used the same guitar riffs that are prominent in “Little Things’ in their 1999 breakthrough hit "I Can't Stop Loving You".

From the original purveyors of classic grunge, I have added Candlebox’sYou” - a vintage hit from the Seattle grunge scene of the early 90’s taken from their 1993 self-titled debut that peaked at number 7 on Billboard's album charts, Florida’s ex-grundig-ger’s Cold’s rock ballad “Cure My Tragedy” from their third and commercially successful Billboard #3 album 'Year of the Spider', Puddle of Mudd’s Billboard #1 hit "Blurry" from their 2001 album 'Come Clean' and the Chicago based new age heavy metal band Disturbed’s Stupefy” from their internationally acclaimed 2000 debut album 'The Sickness'.

You’ll also find Live’s immensely popular "Lightning Crashes" from their 1994 breakthrough album, 'Throwing Copper', Fuel’s no. 1 hit “Hemorrhage (In My Hands)" from their album 'Something Like Human', the San Francisco alternative rock band Third Eye Blind’s "Deep Inside of You” from their second album, 'Blue' and the Grammy-nominated Tonic’s highest charting # 1 Billboard single "If You Could Only See" from their debut album, 'Lemon Parade'.

From outside America, I have added Finland’s Poets of the Fall with their 2006 hit – “Gravity” from their triumphant second album 'Carnival of Rust' and Australian nu metal art rockers - The Butterfly Effect’s "Take It Away" from their 2001 self-titled debut EP that remained in the Australian top 20 charts for almost a year.

The hard to find North Carolina’s Far Too Jones’ 1996 hit "Falling Back Down" from their 'Plastic Hero' EP and “Need To Know”, a small hit from the little known Indianapolis alternative band – Transmatic are reader requests that have been pending for quite awhile now.

Go ahead, download and enjoy the aural energy!!

Websnacker's Saturday Night Fever

Free Mp3s - Awesome Club Hits from the World Over

This is first post after a long break and what better fun than some exhilarating dance music to listen and jive on.

Starting with the UK 2003 dance hit "LA Today" of producer DJ Alex Gold and singer/composer Philip Oakey, you’ll enjoy Bob Sinclar aka Bob Sinclair’s astoundingly famous, Grammy nominated international chart hit of 2006 “World, Hold On”; Deepest Blue, the electronic British group’s club hit of the same name and the vintage synth-pop band Ganymede’s collaboration with Paul Parker on “Perfect Target”.

Dire Straits fans will love popular house mixer’s Deep Dish’s modern rendition of "Money for Nothing". You’ll probably be surprised to know that the house music team of Deep Dish is not european but an Iranian- American duo of Ali Dubfire Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi who are now quite popular in the dance club circuit and now have several global hits under their label.

Other first-rate additions include Germany’s electropop import Ultima Bleep’s remix of their hit “Back”, Duran Duran’s 2007 hit “Falling Down" from the album ‘Red Carpet Massacre’ that was co-written by Timbaland and Justin Timberlake, Spanish dance rockers’ Delorean’s catchy “As Time Breaks Off” and an extended mix of euro popstars Munich Syndrome’s “Love & Dancing”.

For those new to Delerium, the outstanding Canadian electronic fusion band, you’ll like their partnership with Canadian songstress Sarah McLachlan on their worldwide radio and club hit "Silence" that was also featured on the hit soundtrack of 1999’s Brokedown Palace starring Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale. On similar lines, you’ll savor Tiffany Lee, more popularly known as Plumb in her enticing remixed blend of electronica and dance pop on her 2003 club hit “Damaged”, taken from her award winning second album ‘Candy Coated Water Drops’.

As usual, I have also added some requests that include Phil Collin’s son – Simon Collins’ 2000 hit single “Pride”, Soulsavers mix of the 2004 Starsailor hit “Four To The Floor” that was featured on Daniel Craig's Layer Cake Soundtrack and Fred Falke’s remix of the Berlin indie electro band - The Whitest Boy Alive’s 2006 hit “Golden Cage” from their debut album ‘Dreams’. Incidentally, one half of the Whitest Boy Alive duo - Erlend Øye is also the lead member of the Norwegian alternative folk rock band - Kings of Convenience. So, go on, download and enjoy. If you like what you hear, send me a mail pls.
